The Simple Woman's Journal 3/30/09

For Today...March 30, 2009

Outside my window...Snow is melting. It's 47 degrees and sunny, but windy.

I am thinking... of the things I need to get done today.

I am thankful for...the fact that after a weekend of snow, the promise that spring is surely coming.

From the kitchen...breakfast mess to clean up.

I am wearing...baseball shirt and blue jeans.

I am reading...a backlog of magazines that I've accumulated.

I am hoping...for success with a new venture I'm planning right now.

I am creating...This week I'll be putting together my Easter wreath, working on another book from the photo project, creating a slideshow for the WHS website, and hopefully making new garden spaces in my garden!

I am hearing...birds sing outside.

Around the house...I'm getting ready for grocery/errand day.

One of my favorite things...sleeping in on a snowy day (like we had this weekend)...nothing much to do on days like that but snuggle up and watch movies or bake!

A few plans for the rest of the week...I have a busy week. You can see my entire to-do list here.

Here is a picture thought I am sharing with you...This week, instead of looking at one of my pictures, take a look out your nearest window. Is there snow there like there is here? Are things sprouting up around you in a springtime fashion? Isn't it funny how the weather can be so different from state to state? I told you what I see outside my window at the beginning of this post. What do you see out YOUR window?

Making My Home Sing 3/30/09

Making your home sing Mondays

Before I took off the past two weeks, the "singing" I've been doing for my home has been spring cleaning my house one room at a time. Well, if you read those posts you will remember my theory, "If I clean it, spring will come."

Apparently I was correct in that assumption, because the minute that I stopped cleaning look what happened? We got about a FOOT of snow!!

Well you know what that means! I'd better get back to cleaning on the double!

So this week I'm turning up the stereo and singing along while working in my bathroom and living room on Wednesday. I'll dance right into the girls closets on Thursday, working on putting things into order and getting it organized in there

On Friday, I'll work in my room. I'll be cleaning it top to bottom and putting the focus on the decorations in that room, especially the curtains. That should make for a very harmonious week that should put the spring right back into our weather by the weekend!

Wish me luck!

And to see what other bloggers are doing to make their homes sing, please check out Home Sing Monday @ MomsTheWord.

To Do List for 3/30-4/4

Well I've had a very eventful couple of weeks. First the kids had spring break which means we did alot of travelling. We saw family in Oklahoma, we spent alot of downtime too, watching movies and just sitting around playing games or talking. Though it's only been two weeks, it seems like forever since I've worked on my blog. Two weeks might be something close to a year in bloggieland!

Well, after having all this time off to "relax", I've got alot to do this week. This to-do list is the backbone of keeping my weeks "in check". I have been making the checkmark system for my to-do list in previous weeks, but I think this week, I'm going to try the day by day cross off method and see if that helps with my productivity. A word about my morning routine. In the interest of boring you to death, I'm just putting the highlights of my day. But because I LOVE lists, I'm putting my morning routine one time here at the bottom of the page for anyone who might be interested. I'm also listing this for me since I'm printing this off and I've just modified the routine a bit to be more efficient. Before I did the same things, but in a different order. I think I need to have more things done before Abby gets up, so I'm moving things around a bit.

Time For A Short Break

Today my kids get out of school for Spring Break. After school we are travelling to Oklahoma to see family and will be gone out of town, or busy doing things all next week. So I thought instead of trying to get all my posts scheduled, I would just take a break this week and enjoy the time with the kids.

I posted my ta-da post for tomorrow morning, but that's the only thing that I'll be posting until next Sunday the 22nd.

I'll still be reading blogs, just not posting on mine.

I figured those of you who read my blog on a regular basis, or those who I participate in their carnivals might wonder what's going on if I had an empty blog for an entire week. Nothing is wrong, just enjoying the time with my kiddos.

See you in nine days!

Weigh In Wednesday #4

This is the fourth time I'm participating in Weigh In Wednesday with Kate and Joy from Happy To Be At Home.

Food:
Is anyone else watching the Biggest Loser this season? Last nights show where the black team goes crazy and eats thousands of calories...that was my week. I was sure I would gain this week. I didn't, but it's amazing because I ate like a HORSE!

Water:
I did ok with the water this week. I'm still struggling with the Dr. Pepper though.

Exercise:

I exercised ONE day. Which I guess is better than none, but still not good.

Successes:

I don't think I have any successes this week. I'm shocked that I'm even posting, but I guess accountability requires me to say I blew it.

Challenges:

You name it. I ate too much, drank too much dr pepper, didn't exercise...I really blew it this week.

Plans for next week:
Next week is going to be really busy. The kids are on spring break and I'm taking a week off from my blog to spend the time with them. I'll be back the following week though, ready to do lots better than I did this one.

Weigh-in:

Exactly the same, no more or no less. It's a miracle. I should have gained. Glad I didn't though!!

My Errand Book

Do you have errand days like I do where you have ten pieces of paper to keep track of, coupons for three or four different stores that you plan to use, and a plan or map in your mind of where you need to be when so that you aren't back-tracking all day? If so, then you need an errand book like I use.

I love my little errand book. I picked it up on clearance and it sits on my desk all week long as I make my list of errands, then I can assign each errand a pocket. I add to my shopping lists, add in deals that I want to do with coupons (and add the coupons to the smaller coupon pocket). So when I'm ready to go make my errands, I'm all ready to go, book in hand.

The front of it looks like this.

I put my list of where I need to go in the front so that I can know where to drive next (without backtracking if possible). Have you ever driven all the way across town just to remember that you had planned on stopping in at Target or Kmart to pick up something that was on sale? I've let alot of good deals go that way, to save the drive, but if you remember when your a block away, you might as well stop in.

This is what it looks like when you open it up:

There are eight pockets. So I usually have one each for Walgreens, Dillons, Aldi's, and the bank. I add in Walmart, Target, Kmart, tag agent, library, insurance, or anywhere else I need to go each errand day. Each errand will have it's own page/pocket. There is a large pocket and a small pocket for each page. I put my grocery or deal list in the large pocket and then put my coupons to use in that store in the smaller pocket. I also have my regular coupon binder in the car, in case I find something on sale that I hadn't planned on. But I've found planning my coupons beforehand saves me ALOT of time. Organizing them this way saves me alot of stress. I feel more organized, and while I may APPEAR to be organized to alot of people. I'm NOT. I'm constantly struggling to find ways to keep me more organized because I'm not organized naturally. It takes effort for me to keep things in line.

And my errand book...that's what works for me.

What works for you?

Tackling a Really Big Project

Over the weekend I started a really big project. I didn't expect to get it finished by Tuesday, but I thought I would take the opportunity, even though I'm NOT finished with the tackle to talk about how to handle these types of larger projects that might take a week, two, or even a month to finish.

This is what I'm talking about.

As you can see, I have several large boxes of pictures and memorable items, from both my children, my family, high school and my husband's childhood, children, other family pictures etc. This isn't something I'm going to finish in a day. Probably even if I take all day to work on it. And who has a whole day for a pet project anyway? Not me. But I've put it off long enough, time to work on it with the time that I DO have.

To start I emptied the boxes onto my dining room table, to pair like with like. I can compartmentalize these further to work on a bit at a time as well.

Then, I chose to start with the smallest pile and work on that to completion. This gives me the satisfaction of finishing part of the project and the steam to keep going on the rest of the piles.

I'm able to pack each of these piles up at the end of my allotted time now that I've paired them together, and can get out one box at a time to work on each day.

Here is the first assembled item from this project. It's a photo with several pictures of my father while he was in Vietnam. You can also see two of his medals at the bottom of the arrangement. I used a camoflage shirt that my sons had outgrown as background fabric. I think it looks pretty nice.

Some time this week and coming weeks, I'll either have more finished pictures for you, or I'll report my progress and hopefully have an end in sight!

Watching From the Backseat

I have six children, three from my first marriage, two lovely step daughters and one more blessing, Abby, that Jason and I share together. I love all my children. The love is equal but different, as each of their personalities are different and unique.

While each child is loved the same amount, it is Dillon who I have loved the longest. He was MY first. On each other child I didn't experience each first as a parent. My first diaper change, my first fever in a child, my first day of taking a child to school, and all those other many firsts that I was learning just as much as he was. Hopefully his siblings have benefitted from my "learning" and while I have made my share of mistakes, I'm hoping that the love and desire to do well, has overshadowed any missteps along the way.

He is my first teenager too. This brings a whole new dimension to parenting. There is a very tricky balancing act, allowing him to grow up when he believes he is already grown, but I know there is still a long way to go. There is the learning to let go, as I can't grow up FOR him, and he has to make his own mistakes, even though it's as painful for me to watch them being made as the parent as for him as he's making them.

The process is ironic, because at the same time he is learning to drive, he is also taking the wheel in his own life. I have two choices in this process. I can either cringe with each mile and hold my breath waiting for us to hit the ditch, worrying and stressing out. Or, I can take peace with what I've taught him about good driving so far, guide him as needed but take a deep breath and trust him (and God) with the steering wheel. Either way, he's going to get where he needs to go, I just want the trip to be one that we can both remember as a good one.

I am thankful for...my wonderful family and all my many blessings

From the kitchen...Breakfast dishes to be done

I am wearing...old navy tshirt and capri jeans

I am reading...I've been catching up on magazines. I ordered some for free and haven't been reading them, so I'm getting one a night. The next book I want to read (might get it today at the library) is 5000 Year Leap.

I am hoping...to hear good news about that job this week

I am creating...many things this week. Photo project is being put together this week, an alien birthday cake for my father in law and alot of spring cleaning and decorating is to be done...that is if I get it all accomplished!

I am hearing...Franklin (Abby's tv show)

Around the house...laundry to be done, dishes to do, groceries to buy, photos to arrange, cleaning to be done...pheww, I'm tired already!

One of my favorite things...Snuggling up with Abby watching a show, reading a book, or any reason at all.

A few plans for the rest of the week...I have a busy week. You can see my entire to-do list here.

Here is a picture thought I am sharing with you...Riding in the back seat, going down the highway on a trip home from Oklahoma, I snapped this picture of two of my daughters, Shelby and Abigail. I love the expression on Abby's face!

Spring Cleaning Week #2

Making your home sing Mondays

Didn't you absolutely LOVE the weather last week? I TOLD you, if you clean it, spring will come! I guess that means I better keep it up, so that this good weather will stick around a little more.

This week I'm in my kitchen.

I've divided my small kitchen into five areas, so that I can tackle one area per day, hopefully.

Clean Fridge Inside/Out/Top/Underneath & coils
I think that's pretty self explanatory

North wall cabinets, counters inside & out
This consists of the stove, and cabinets above, the sink and cabinets below and one set of upper and lower cabinets, and counter top. Also are two shelving units (the little bookshelf type). One houses our toaster and coffeemaker and the breads and drink assortments that go with them. The other holds plastic cups and easy access items for height challenged youngsters.

East wall cabinets, counters inside & out
Countertop with drawers and cabinets underneath (houses plastic storage and pitchers, etc). Also this wall contains a shelf that holds my staple supplies, breadmaker, some cookbooks and large items like electric skillet, crock pot, etc.

Pantry
Self explanatory

floors, windows & decorative touches
I'd like to bring a little spring inside. Not sure yet how I'll do that. Maybe I can scour the resale shops this week for some spring patterned items?

Well, I'm ready to get started in the morning. Wish me luck! With this project, the photo project that's all over my dining room table and my to-do list I have scheduled for my garden, this is going to be an awfully busy week.

Oh, and my mother in law called and asked me to bake an alien cake for my father in law. I'm tickled to do it, but hope I can figure out how to make an alien. I'll remember to get pictures this time. I forgot with Evelyn's cake until it was too late.

To see how others are making their own homes sing this week, head over to MomsTheWord. She has a terrific post this week about hospitality.

Menu Plan for 3/8

This past week has been so hectic. It was a struggle to even get my normal day to day "must do" items accomplished. I found myself driving six hours trips on two of these days and having impromptu meetings that I needed to attend that took up good portions of my time and made my to-do lists hard to finish. It was such a blessing to have my dinners planned. Even though, on Thursday I was in a car and couldn't go with the plan (McDonald's dollar menu to the rescue!), it made days that I was home at dinner so much easier when I knew what I was fixing and everything was ready to go.

Here's the menu for this week:

Monday

Grilled Stuffed Burritos
Rice
Salad

Tuesday

Santa Fe Chicken
scalloped potatoes
green beans
Salad

Wednesday

BBQ sandwiches @ mother in laws
for my father in law's b-day

Thursday

Pork Steak
mashed potatoes
green beans

Fri-Sun
I'll be travelling to Oklahoma again, so no menu's planned.

I'm so pleased with my daughter Shelby. She has won first prize in an essay contest about "Why You Should Vote". She was asked this past week to read her essay aloud to an organization and she did well with that also. Here is her essay, in case you'd like to read it:

The Importance of Voting

By Shelby Robertson

Why is voting important? Many people have asked this very question. Most people think that their vote doesn’t count, that it is a waste of time, but the only way democracy works is if everybody votes and puts their opinion into action. Voting is a right and privilege. It is also your responsibility as a citizen of the United States. You should vote because you will be stating your opinion, it is your right, and your responsibility.

Your opinion can only be heard if you vote. Voting is letting your personal voice be heard as one, and collectively as a whole with the millions of other people in the United States. If we don’t vote, then the government will not know what “We the people” want. The outcome of every election affects each and every one of us in a particular way, good or bad. If you are not voting with the majority, you still live with the outcome of the election. The act of voting is not a guarantee but is a right that has been afforded to you by others that have fought and died for that right.

Voting is truly a privilege that none should take lightly. Before the 1900s, only white men who were landowners were given the right to vote; but in 1920 white women were given the right through the 19th amendment. In 1870 through the 15th amendment, African Americans were “given” the right. Here in the United States, we get to make our own choices and yet some people still choose to have others make their decisions for them. In some countries, they don’t get to vote, and their opinion is given to them. If people from oppressed countries had the opportunity to vote in America, they would definitely make it a priority to be at a voting booth on the day of elections. Voting isn’t only your privilege; it is also your duty as a citizen of the United States.

Hilary Clinton once said, “Voting is the most precious right of every citizen and we have a moral obligation to ensure the integrity of our voting process.” Voting is not merely making a mark on a ballot to pick a candidate or put a law into action, but is making and educated and informed decision that changes the course of history. This is why voting is a responsibility that comes with age. We have elected our first African American president because “We the people” took the responsibility to pick the person that fit our vision of the future.

So why is voting important? Many elections have been won by a mere margin that have saved a country or was its demise. In 1800, ONE VOTE in the Electoral College gave Thomas Jefferson the Presidency over Aaron Burr. In 1923, ONE VOTE gave Adolph Hitler leadership of the Nazi party. Voting is important. Everybody in the United States should vote to have a say in what happens to their country, because it is something they have a right to do, and it is something that is an obligation. In America, we have a chance to write our own history books by just making a mark on a piece of paper. That is why every American should vote.

It's Garden Time Again!

It's almost 5:00 on Friday afternoon and I've just found out about another carnival that I am anxious to join in on. When perusing the links on Frugal Friday I found this great blog that's starting a carnival TODAY for everyone to comment each week on what they're doing for their gardens. I thought "wow, this is just what the blog dr. ordered!" since the gardening season is fast upon us. It's Home of the Peterson Clan and the carnival is The Garden Club, starting today if you want to join too!

Since the carnival is today, and it's the end of the day I thought the best way to participate is to link to this entry that I made a bit ago with all my garden plans.

Next week I can blog a bit more about what I've done this week...but unfortunately, my poor garden is neglected this week so there is nothing that I can blog about today.

Happy Gardening!

Friday's Fave Five 3/6/09

What a busy busy week! I've been trying to keep up with my to-do list and other things keep coming up. I've spent most of the week in our truck going places instead of spending much time getting things done around here. Which is ok, those things needed to be done too...but my list isn't getting very far this week. It's time again though for the weekend and that means I reflect a little bit on how the week went. Here are my favorite five:

1. Improvement with the relationship with Dillon. My oldest child and I have been having those teenage conflicts that come up sometimes and I think we've finally worked our way to the other end! Praise God...I have been praying so hard about it. I knew he was listening!

2. My sweet husband made me chicken noodle soup (FROM SCRATCH, using one of my recipes) over the weekend when I was sick again.

3. Free groceries. This week I got two tubes of Colgate toothpaste for free (plus 1.50 back towards other groceries), two Colgate toothbrushes, two cans of pineapple chunks, and two pks of eyedrops...all for free. Found other good deals too, but that was the FREE stuff.

4. Spring-like temperatures!! I'm loving this weather, I just wish it was here to stay!!

5. TV series on DVD. While I was sick and with other downtime I've really been enjoying watching TV with no commericials one episode after another (as time allows of course). I watched the first two seasons of Heroes, which I'd never seen before in the last three weeks and I really have enjoyed it. It's nice to use the stop and resume feature on a dvd on a day when you have lots of laundry to do. You can watch, get up, get things done and come back to fold right where you left off. Amazing!!

Keeping a Pricebook

Today I wanted to talk about the value of keeping a pricebook. I'm a pretty thrifty shopper. I know how much I'm willing to pay for the things that I shop for. The price I am willing to pay is less than what you can walk into your regular grocery store and pay because I wait for sales, I buy sale items in multiples so that I can make it to the next sale and I use coupons. But the question then becomes...so when is something a good deal?

To answer that question, I propose that you start yourself a pricebook. I'm sure that there are many ways to go about making a pricebook, but I'll tell you how I did mine. I started by choosing the store with the best overall prices. I went to Aldi's. That's a discount store with mostly storebrand or brands you never heard of on most items. They have name brand items that are shipped in as special deals, clearance, etc but you can't count on finding national brand items every time you shop there. For most items there may only be one brand available. They don't even bag the groceries for you, you must bring your own bags or pick up boxes as you're shopping (I do both). And you have to "rent" your shopping cart for a quarter that will be refunded when you return it at the end of your trip. Aldi's is not the most convenient place to shop, but since you aren't paying for those little conveniences, you do find a lower price there. I'm describing Aldi's because while I know many places have them, many do not. I'd never heard of Aldi's until I moved to Kansas. We didn't have them in Oklahoma. (The semi-equivalent in Oklahoma is Sav A Lot)

So to make my pricebook, I went into my grocery store, spiral notebook and pen in hand and went down the aisles like I normally would. Picking the items that I normally shop for, I would write down the item, brand, size package and the price. It may need to be noted, you don't have to price EVERYTHING. Just the things that you shop for most. Don't make it so time invasive that it's not worth doing, just pick the things that you are getting once a week or several times a month...your most frequently purchased items, and the ones who take the larger portion of your budget. For example it's worth noting the price on the gallon of milk and eggs, but not really worth your time to write down how much a can of olives is unless your family eats them everyday like snacks. It is worth your time to note the prices normally for meats and things that you aren't picking up every week, but that take alot of your food budget, so that you can note patterns in sales and figure out what the best prices are. So I always look at the prices on whole chickens, chicken quarters, ground beef, turkey and the breakfast and lunch meats. By noting these prices I know what is "regular" and I can pick up enough at a sale to tide us over until the next sale, keeping us from buying at the "regular" prices!

So, at Aldi's, I just went down the aisle, and wrote down the following information for our most frequently purchased items:

  • ITEM
  • BRAND (At Aldi's I would put whatever brand they sell...this field becomes important at other stores)
  • SIZE PKG
  • PRICE
  • UNIT PRICE (you can figure this later, by dividing item price by the size on the package...but you definately need the information as you compare prices)
Do that all throughout the store.

The next step, I did on the following grocery trip. I compared my list as I shopped with my regular grocery store, Dillons. I only made entries, however, when I found prices that were cheaper. For instance, Aldi's does have cheap cereal. It's much cheaper than the national brands, however, you can buy the generic cornflakes, raisin bran and fruit loop (type) cereal at Dillons for under a dollar. The idea is to have record of the CHEAPEST REGULAR prices in town. I wouldn't record sale prices (those can be watched with sale flyers and is another budget topic by itself) I just want to note the everyday low price that I can find walking into any of these stores on any given day.

I took this information home and when I felt that I had compared regular prices at most of the stores that I shop and felt that I had sufficient information on "everyday low prices" then I transferred this information in pencil into a little pocket sized address book. This step isn't absolutely necessary. Many people just keep it in that same spiral notebook arranged by the shopping aisles, but I like being able to have my items alphabetized. Other people go high tech (and labor intensive) and make elaborate spreadsheets. I tried this and halfway through found I'd rather just use my address book. It's easier and portable and by using pencil, it's easily updated.

I keep this information current by comparing once in a while as I shop, price book in hand and I can also compare my receipts to the price book after I'm home.

I love my price book and feel that it helps me to get the ultimate best price available. This is how I know whether buying a national brand with a coupon or waiting to buy from Aldi's, is better. This is how I know when I see a sale, if it's better to pick up one, ten or zero. To me, it is an absolutely essential tool for a frugal shopper. And now, since you see how simple it is to make one, I hope that you will use this simple tool as well.

Grocery Results

I have been so busy this week! I went shopping on Monday and here it is Thursday and I'm just reconciling my receipts with my budget.

Here's how I did:

Walgreens:

Trans #1
5.99 Tide
-.50 coupon for Tide
.89 Reynolds wrap foil (raincheck from last week)
.89 again
3.29 Colgate toothpaste
-.75 coupon for Colgate
14.99 Blink Tears

Total: 26.84 w/tax
This transaction had all kinds of problems. First they rang up the eyedrops @ the wrong price, and the coupons that would have given me the foil for free the cashier wouldn't accept. Oh well, still a good price.

Rec'd $4.29 RR's

Trans #2 (fixing the eyedrops)
Refund 14.99
7.99 Eyedrops

Rec'd back $8.00 RR + 14.99 cash

Out of Pocket for those 2: $6.30

Trans #3
1.99 2pks of Ritz crackers (b1g1)
1.99 2pks of Ritz crackers (b1g1)
-2.00 Ritz coupon (so four pks of Ritz for 1.99!)
3.29 Colgate
-.75 Colgate coupon
5.99 Tide
-.50 Tide coupon

Total $10.94 w tax
Rec'd back $4.29 RR's
Out of Pocket: $6.65

free toothpaste (plus 1.50 towards my other purchases)
and 4.99 for the Tide is a good price
The only thing I didn't do great on is the foil...but .89/ea isn't a BAD price, I just know I could have done better, but didn't want to hold up the line or have them take it off.
Total OOP: $12.95

Dillons
2 Tortilla chips $1/ea
2 Wheat Bread .88/ea
10# bag potatoes 2.99
3 Pillsbury Cinnamon Rolls 2.29/ea
-.55 coupon doubled to $1
-30 coupon doubled to .60 x2
2 Dole pineapple chunks $1/ea
-.75 coupon doubled to $1 x2
2 Kraft American Singles $2.50 ea
-.49 x2
Total Out of Pocket $26.49

So total for the day: $39.44 well within my $80/wk limit

Weigh In Wednesday #3

Weigh In Wednesday with Kate and Joy from Happy To Be At Home

I got so busy yesterday that I didn't get it posted. But here it is on Thursday instead.

Food:
Doing ok. Nothing extra great, but I haven't had any big cheats.

Water:
Still drinking lots of water.

Exercise:

Still haven't started the exercise and I guess it showed this week at the weigh in :(

Successes:

I've figured out that if I chew gum I'm not tempted to snack when the kids are eating something.

Challenges:

Dr Pepper...of course

Plans for next week:
Try counting calories. I signed up at Calorie Count and have been logging my calories today. We'll see if maybe I'm eating more than I think I am when I actually start counting everything I put in my mouth.

Weigh-in:

So much for losing two pounds last week, I gained them back this week plus one!

Tackling To-Do's on Tuesday

I love the new way I've started doing my to-do list. Lisa over at Crazy Adventures in Parenting gave a link for html help regarding just these kinds of posts. So now when Blogger is cooperating, I can update my progress daily as I get around to it.

It really helped last week to see how much I'd accomplished and how much I still had left to go. Also, the public display factor helps to motivate me, and keeps me accountable. Even my kids read this blog sometimes, so I can't check it unless I've actually done it!

So this week, I'm tackling another to-do list to work on throughout the week. Even if I don't get through it all, I've got a good jumping off point for NEXT week, right? Here goes!

Daily Items
Continue daily bible study/prayer
Read/Respond/Clean Out emails
Read/Clean Out Reader
Do item from Office Organization list

Tuesday: Already off to a bad start. I had some last minute plans and was gone until 8:00 tonight for an important meeting, so I accomplished pretty much nothing today. Oh well, maybe tomorrow!
Weds: Kept up, but didn't do any catchup
Thurs: Getting alot accomplished today. Caught up some of the items from Tues.
Fri: Getting a late start on the list. This week has been full of sideroads (necessary sideroads but sideroads nonetheless!)

Weekly Items
Laundry Catch Up
Pay Bills/Paperwork
Plan/preparation of Blog Posts
Kitchen Prep
breakfast sandwiches
cookies
church pot-luck cancelled this, not going to the pot luck this time (something came up)

Spring Cleaning Items
Porch
Entryway
Dining Room
Declutter books from book shelves
Change clocks on Sunday (time change)
Check batteries in smoke alarm

Reunion Items
Mail out surveys/bios to new addresses
Research more banquet venues-delegated this item out but I'm adding new ones :)
Try to make calls on the short list
Update my spreadsheets and email them to the boys by next week
Get with H. and see if she can use a hand getting started on her list or with making a website

Other To-Do Items
Boxes from Storage
Prepare Garden Beds

Phewww!!

That's a pretty long and ambitious list. I know though, that it can be done if I will make good use of my time, and be like the Nike commercial..."Just Do It!"

Be sure to check back throughout the week as I'll be marking these off as I do them! And if you're interested in seeing what others in the blogosphere are tackling this week, be sure to visit Tackle It Tuesday @ 5 Minutes for Mom and To-Do Tuesday @ Crazy Adventures in Parenting.

Simple Woman's Journal

For Today...March 2, 2009

Outside my window... still dark, 16 degrees, cold and windy

I am thinking... of a friend I went to high school with, who's funeral is today. I can't make it because of the six hour+ drive, but her memory is heavy on my mind today.

I am thankful for... my sweet husband. Abby and I were sick again over the weekend and he made us chicken noodle soup...from scratch!

From the kitchen... Quiet. The day hasn't really started yet.

I am wearing... pink striped pajamas

I am reading... I'm going to the library today. I just finished The Last Patriot

I am hoping... to get a call with GOOD NEWS

I am creating... a to-do list for spring cleaning (it's still winter, but if I clean, it will come! lol)

I am hearing... computer hum, heating stove sounds and overall quiet (everyone will be getting up in about 5-10 minutes)

Around the house... I'm about to start a load of laundry and breakfast. Today I'll be working on the front porch for my spring cleaning project.

One of my favorite things... is learning all about Walgreens. I'll post the plan I have today later when I show the results. I'm really bringing home some bargains. I can't believe I didn't shop there before this year!

A few plans for the rest of the week... I will post my to-do list tomorrow. But some of the highlights are spring cleaning projects, time change tasks, kitchen tasks and a large project of going through some storage boxes with photos and keepsakes.

Here is a picture thought I am sharing with you...Just because I think it's cute...

Making My Home Sing

Making your home sing Mondays

Every year about this time my thoughts begin to stray towards the garden. I dream about what I will grow, bountiful harvests, beautiful flowers blooming in the flower gardens, the smell of lilac coming from the bushes in my front yard. Oh how I love spring.

Have you ever seen that movie "Field Of Dreams?" Kevin Costner is told by a still, small voice "If you build it, they will come"

I too am hearing this still, small voice. It says "If you clean it, Spring will come."

"If you clean it, Spring will come."

So with that in mind, I'm beginning my spring cleaning tour this week. I'm going one room/area at a time so that by the time spring actually DOES get here I should be in good and CLEAN shape!

This weeks agenda is:

Front Porch
clean off cobwebs
sweep/wash walls on porch
sweep/wash floors
windows in this area and front door
plan pots & seating arrangements for this year
fresh spring wreath for porch (make or buy)

Entryway
cobwebs
wash prints on walls
vacuum area
hang mirror
re-visit ideas about shelf in this area

Dining Room
cobwebs
wash walls/light switches as needed
dust light fixture
windows/blinds
dust and reorganize each shelf
make place for Great Grandmothers buffet that is coming (or plan the space)
vacuum

So that's how I'm planning on making my home SING this week. What are you doing this week for your own home's harmony? For great ideas, visit Home Sing Monday @ MomsTheWord
