Tackling Spring Round Up

Normally Tackles are something that I've done on my own. Some home improvement, craft or home-keeping task that I need to get done. This week however, I'm posting about something that my entire family, and many of our dearest friends do together two times a year. Once in the spring and once in the fall, we all come together at my father's ranch and work cattle for two days. It's called "Round Up".

I had decided last week to write about round up for this week's tackle. I usually take pictures anyway and since it's an extremely labor intensive project, it fits the bill. However, I wasn't able to take pictures of this year's event, my son had an accident early on Saturday (I had only taken four pictures so far) and I spent most of Saturday in the Emergency Room. Sunday I spent taking care of him, so I didn't get enough pictures to write the article, so I've decided to substitute in shots from last year to describe what this Round Up weekend is all about. Because even though there was an injury and I wasn't really as involved this year (except for meals and LOTS of muddy cowboy laundry) the work still went on and the job got done. So I still want to tell you about it as I've received many comments wondering how it all works and people who were excited to see the post about it this week.

Round up is quite the production. Weeks before the event my father is getting ready purchasing vaccine and vaccination supplies, getting the house ready for the many workers from out of town who will be spending the weekend, getting each of the corrals prepared for the work. One of my aunts and I usually handle the menu's. We plan out the lunches for the two days and try to figure out who will be coming and how many we will be feeding. These cowboys and cowgirls are working for the food and the company, so we can't disappoint!

Round up is a two day event occurring in two different locations. My father runs cattle on both his own ranch and more recently my grandmother's place. When my grandfather passed away, he purchased the land around my grandmother's house and yard and so now his ranch is expanded. I jokingly call it his b-ranch location! On Saturday all the work is done at the ranch at my Grandmother's and on Sunday all the work is done on the place where my dad lives (a few miles away). The process is the same for both days, just one day at one location and the other day is at the other location.

The morning of roundup a handful of cowboys, usually my dad and brother, my husband and oldest son and a couple of friends of ours will go out and gather the cows from the pastures where they stay. When they are all "rounded up", they are moved into the corrals where we will be working.

And sorted into pens according to what needs to be done. Bulls are segregated, heifers, big calves that can fit into the chute and then finally the smaller calves are sorted.

First we work the heifers and big calves. They are given vaccinations, wormed, tagged and sometimes when needed, gyno exams are given to the heifers who are pregnant. Occasionally there will be a cow that needs to be dehorned or an older calf that hasn't yet been castrated. Most castrations though are done on the smaller calves.

These cattle are moved from the pen they were sorted into and moved up the alley and into the chute.

Then each is worked simultaneously given the proper attention when they are in the chute. There is an "assembly line" of people each handling a different chore. My father is the leader and gives instructions for each animal as it comes through, as some will be treated differently than others and he knows each one individually and can identify their needs.

Ideally this is a quick process, though sometimes (like Saturday) there can be moments of excitement and it can take a little longer than we planned.

The last step is working the smaller calves. These calves need to be roped and thrown since they won't fit in the chute to be worked as the larger ones were.

First the roper gets into the pen with the smaller calves and each one is roped...

We try to have more than one roper, to make this part go faster (as there are usually many calves to be worked). With more than one roper, then we can process several calves at a time. We try to have several teams for each position (roper, thrower, needles, cutting and tagging)

The roped calf is then pulled into the lot where it can be worked...

The cowboy who throws will pick a good location in the work lot, and then throw the calf...
When the calf is down and held, others will come in to process the calf as needed. In this picture you can see how many jobs are done at once so the calf doesn't have to be held still for long. The calf isn't hurt by any of the process, as it's skin is thicker than ours and it's tolerance for pain is too. It does, however, HATE to be held still. We try to get the necessary procedures done without causing too much stress to the animals.
This is an enormous tackle, much bigger than any tackle that I normally post about that I do by myself. It is a great expression of how family can work together out of love to help a family member. It is a wonderful lesson for the children

Help!! I Can't Find My Desk!

I'm embarrassed to show you this. I'll warn you now.

I think almost every family has a place like this in their home. A stuff magnet. A place that no matter how hard you try, it is nearly impossible to keep STUFF from accumulating on. The cold hard truth is, that even though it's cleaned up now, if you check back again after all the kids are home from school with their STUFF, and I come in with something that I want to check the computer on...more stuff. The truth is that by bedtime tonight it will look ALMOST as bad as this before picture.
The scanner was still out from my picture project I finished last week. Pictures and paperwork from the kids stacked on every surface area...even Abby's snack dish found it's way onto my desk. It seems like no matter how hard I try, this ends up being our dumping ground for everything. I USUALLY clean it about once a day, or every other day...but this time it's been a lick and a promise for several days in a row and it was getting EXTREMELY ugly.

Here is the after picture. Ahhh, I can breathe again.

Oh, and my garden is my excuse as to why it looked this bad. So check back later in the week so you can see why I wasn't cleaning my office before today!

Finally finishing the Photo Project

I started a photo project about a MONTH ago. I thought, no big deal, I will sort all my photo's and scan them all into my computer to make digital photo albums to share with family and then sort them by type and year and put them in albums or scrapbooks. Phewww...sounds like quite a chunk right? HELLO...I didn't even have a CLUE! I have worked on this project days on end for over a month and actually there is still more that I could do at this point, but I'm going to call it done!

I started with a full table of pictures which I sorted into tubs that I could put away and pull out to work on one tub at a time.

Then I scanned each tub of pictures until they were all scanned. When I finished putting them all into my computer I made some digital albums on Photobucket for my family.

For my side of the family:

For my husband's side of the family:

And I used the pictures to make slideshows on my high school reunion website also.

There are more, but if I add any others it will probably overwhelm you too!

Then I used a few of the pictures to make photo presentations, like this one of my father
And then finally, I sorted the pictures into dated order and put them into leather albums like this:
Yes, that baby on the cover is me.

It was a lot of hard work but now I can enjoy my pictures here in my home at my leisure and I can easily share them with friends and family.

So here's to finally finishing the photo project.

Now, I guess I'm off to take more pictures!

Tackling a Really Big Project

Over the weekend I started a really big project. I didn't expect to get it finished by Tuesday, but I thought I would take the opportunity, even though I'm NOT finished with the tackle to talk about how to handle these types of larger projects that might take a week, two, or even a month to finish.

This is what I'm talking about.

As you can see, I have several large boxes of pictures and memorable items, from both my children, my family, high school and my husband's childhood, children, other family pictures etc. This isn't something I'm going to finish in a day. Probably even if I take all day to work on it. And who has a whole day for a pet project anyway? Not me. But I've put it off long enough, time to work on it with the time that I DO have.

To start I emptied the boxes onto my dining room table, to pair like with like. I can compartmentalize these further to work on a bit at a time as well.

Then, I chose to start with the smallest pile and work on that to completion. This gives me the satisfaction of finishing part of the project and the steam to keep going on the rest of the piles.

I'm able to pack each of these piles up at the end of my allotted time now that I've paired them together, and can get out one box at a time to work on each day.

Here is the first assembled item from this project. It's a photo with several pictures of my father while he was in Vietnam. You can also see two of his medals at the bottom of the arrangement. I used a camoflage shirt that my sons had outgrown as background fabric. I think it looks pretty nice.

Some time this week and coming weeks, I'll either have more finished pictures for you, or I'll report my progress and hopefully have an end in sight!

Tackling To-Do's on Tuesday

I love the new way I've started doing my to-do list. Lisa over at Crazy Adventures in Parenting gave a link for html help regarding just these kinds of posts. So now when Blogger is cooperating, I can update my progress daily as I get around to it.

It really helped last week to see how much I'd accomplished and how much I still had left to go. Also, the public display factor helps to motivate me, and keeps me accountable. Even my kids read this blog sometimes, so I can't check it unless I've actually done it!

So this week, I'm tackling another to-do list to work on throughout the week. Even if I don't get through it all, I've got a good jumping off point for NEXT week, right? Here goes!

Daily Items
Continue daily bible study/prayer
Read/Respond/Clean Out emails
Read/Clean Out Reader
Do item from Office Organization list

Tuesday: Already off to a bad start. I had some last minute plans and was gone until 8:00 tonight for an important meeting, so I accomplished pretty much nothing today. Oh well, maybe tomorrow!
Weds: Kept up, but didn't do any catchup
Thurs: Getting alot accomplished today. Caught up some of the items from Tues.
Fri: Getting a late start on the list. This week has been full of sideroads (necessary sideroads but sideroads nonetheless!)

Weekly Items
Laundry Catch Up
Pay Bills/Paperwork
Plan/preparation of Blog Posts
Kitchen Prep
breakfast sandwiches
cookies
church pot-luck cancelled this, not going to the pot luck this time (something came up)

Spring Cleaning Items
Porch
Entryway
Dining Room
Declutter books from book shelves
Change clocks on Sunday (time change)
Check batteries in smoke alarm

Reunion Items
Mail out surveys/bios to new addresses
Research more banquet venues-delegated this item out but I'm adding new ones :)
Try to make calls on the short list
Update my spreadsheets and email them to the boys by next week
Get with H. and see if she can use a hand getting started on her list or with making a website

Other To-Do Items
Boxes from Storage
Prepare Garden Beds

Phewww!!

That's a pretty long and ambitious list. I know though, that it can be done if I will make good use of my time, and be like the Nike commercial..."Just Do It!"

Be sure to check back throughout the week as I'll be marking these off as I do them! And if you're interested in seeing what others in the blogosphere are tackling this week, be sure to visit Tackle It Tuesday @ 5 Minutes for Mom and To-Do Tuesday @ Crazy Adventures in Parenting.

Tackling To-Do's on Tuesday

I thought I would be in town by now. I am feeling so much better, I feel like I've finally kicked this cold. There's nothing left now but just a little bit of cough and congestion (easily fixed by otc cold meds).

But wouldn't you know it? Yesterday at just about bedtime, Abigail starting throwing up. She threw up from about 8 last night until about 10:00 this morning about once an hour or so. So we spent the night in the living room with her on her princess couch (washable and I can throw it out if need be too) and staying close to the bathroom. I washed sheets and towels all night and when she finally stopped throwing up, we both slept on the big couch until about 1:00 this afternoon. So basically, I've accomplished nothing today (except for the fact there's no sick laundry to do, I did it as we went!)

I'm waiting until my husband gets home to go to town for groceries. I don't want to risk throwing up in aisle three!!

I've been doing really well with these lists as part of Tackle It Tuesday. Over the weekend I found another blog (one that participates in Tackle It as a matter of fact) that is also doing lists to tackle. She has a carnival too. So I thought I would link to both carnivals with my lists now. So go to both Crazy Adventures in Parenting and 5 Minutes for Mom to see other lists and tackles this Tuesday!

Tackle It Tuesday

Tackle It Tuesday Meme

I'm late getting this out since it's technically Wednesday (but I'm going to cheat and date it yesterday!)

I'm sick AGAIN. Just when I thought we'd kicked this junk out the door, last night I had a little sore throat, today I can't walk to the kitchen without coughing so hard I can't breath. My throat is killing me, my lungs are full of gunk. It's nasty. I hope you and your family don't get it because we are having a heck of a time getting rid of it. And this time it's come on FAST. (Maybe because it was never really gone??) I have cleaned like a crazy person, washed everyone's sheets, changed our toothbrushes...I don't know what else to do. But I hope we get rid of it quick, I have too much to do to sit around and be sick.

Anyway...here's my list of to-do's this week.

  • Work on reunion to-do list a little each day
  • Continue with bible study
  • Do better with diet. I have done a terrible job this week and I have to account for it tomorrow...oh well.
  • Work on photo project at least two days out of the week...it's not going to get done by itself
  • catch up on laundry (again), I don't dislike laundry, in fact I kind of like to do laundry, so I can't understand why it piles up so fast!!
  • Get out and get that front and south garden bed cleaned up and ready to go...it's almost garden time.
  • make sure all the garden supplies are ready to go (I have all my seed as of this past Monday!)
  • Plant first seeds on Feb 22!

Tackling Catching Up After Being Sick

Tackle It Tuesday Meme

My To-Do List was left unfinished last week because midweek I got the flu. I've been sick really up until today when I've been able to catch up a little bit. I still have a laundry list of things I need to accomplish to get back on track though. Here's my list to be checked off as Ta-Da's on Saturday:

  • Keep after the bible study program and intensity of prayer
  • Organize the file cabinet (I got started on that a little last night, purge done, need to finish)
  • Get tax stuff together and take to accountant (I got it all together but haven't made the trip to town since being ill)
  • Continue working on photo project (this will probably take MANY weeks, the goal is to work towards the finish line a bit at a time)
  • Garden planned out (need to start indoor seeds next month)
  • Blog work (got the plan last week, but didn't write while ill...need to develop that a bit more)
Another thing happened last week. Some of my high school friends and I realized it's time to organize the 20th High School Reunion. We were the class officers so we need to try to find all our classmates, plan activities, organize lodging options and venues for activities and send out invitations in time to do a reunion before this summer is over. So each week I will be making reunion goals for my to-do list as well.

Wish me luck working on my goals this week. What goals are you working on this week? You can see what other people are doing, and let people know what you are up to too, by checking out 5 Minutes For Mom and her blog carnival Tackle it Tuesday!

From To-Do to Ta-Da

Tackle It Tuesday Meme

Well I have alot of goals to accomplish this week. What I have decided to do for Tackle It Tuesday's from now on is list my goals for the WEEK, and try to accomplish as many as possible on Tuesday, and on Saturday I will report back with whether I finished up or not with my list for the week on Ta-Da Saturday (my own thing, not a carnival). So To-Do's on Tuesday...Ta-Da's on Saturday.

I will update the list throughout the day with red check marks, for the things I have accomplished today.

  • New Bible Study Program daily (3/7 days done!)
  • Organize File Cabinet (this is a big job, I'm redoing the whole system)
  • Get tax stuff together to take to accountant next Monday
  • Continue working on photo project
  • Get garden plotted out
  • Blog planning and posting list
  • Bake and Decorate Evelyn's cake
  • call school regarding some paperwork needed
  • freezer inventory update and reorganization

Tackle It Tuesday

Tackle It Tuesday Meme

Well today school was cancelled because of snow. With extra people in the house you would think things would go faster (extra hands) but somehow it doesn't quite work out that way.

Here is my list for today. I will update it as I get more things accomplished:

  • All laundry washed, dried and folded or hung up and put away

  • Kitchen cleaned up from breakfast and lunch and ready for supper

  • Spend 30minutes -1hr on photo project I'm organizing in my bedroom
  • Clean Bedrooms (and help Abby when kids clean theirs)
  • Do my 365 Deed

Update: I added in making a loaf of Banana bread (and muffins) while I was cooking supper. Still haven't finished Abby's room but finished mine. We will work more on her's after dinner.
